PTA Board and MCPS News: Meeting Tuesday, January 13

Due to the snow day, the January PTA Board Meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, January 13 from 7 to 9 pm at the Twinbrook Media Center. We will be working through many items, including plans for International Night, the 2014-2015 yearbook, an update from Mrs. Johnson and Ms. Alonso, a look at our budget and looking beyond to other spring events. We will also discuss the City of Rockville Mayor and Council’s current proposal to change its ordinance on school capacity. All are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion or ask questions.

In MCPS news:

— The Board of Education is considering several proposals to change school bell times, which would take effect for the 2015-2016 school year. The main reason for these proposed changes is to allow high school students to start school later than the current 7:25 am bell. Research shows that high school students need more sleep. Some of the proposals would have elementary schools starting much earlier than our current 9:15 am start, while other proposals have school starting as late as 9:50 am. See for a summary of the proposals being considered and information on how to submit comments.

— On Thursday, January 15, 7 pm, a PTA representative from our Richard Montgomery cluster will testify at the Board of Education’s hearing on Dr. Starr’s FY2016 draft Operating Budget of $2.4 billion. That’s an enormous amount of money the county spends on our 202 schools! See for more information. Parents and community members from Twinbrook are encouraged to attend to support Lynn Parker Perry as she testifies on behalf of our school and cluster. You don’t have to stay for the entire hearing, and she will speak towards the beginning.
